WEEK 4- IMAGE TRANSFER

Reflection:
Today's lecture we learned about Image transfer and stamp printing.
Transfer of image can add another layer of texture and imagery to my artwork.
Three ways to create transfers: glues and mediums, heat, solvents.

As for Stamping, the materials used could be linoleum, wood block, rubber block, compressed foam and even potato!(I was quite impressed that potato could do stamping....)

To help myself to better understand the lecture, a hands-on practice was a must!
Let's try Image Transfer!

1. Iron
Print: Laser print
Surface: paper, boards, fabric, wood (smooth surfaces)

Let's watch a tutorial on How to iron transfer images to wood on Youtube!
Practice:
1.Image transfer using ironing

Do you know how cute was the iron that i was using////_//////

Haha i couldn't stop laughing when Huei Hoon took out this tiny iron that really made me want(very much) to roll my eyes...
Anyway, it looked really cute instead.
Smaller than my palms! How tiny it is!
Feel like buying one ///_////
This was done by Huei Hoon !
Can't wait to try on my own!
Placing the page with images directly on a piece of fabrics and IRON OVER IT!
Let's see how thing's going on!
Oops!
It seemed like the ink did not transfer to the fabric very well.
Try harder!
Final Outcome!
Sad to say i didn't make it...seems like i have failed to transfer images with iron TT_TT

2. Solvent:
Print: Laser print
Solvent: Chartpak AD marker blender pen/thinner/rubbing alcohol/ Kryton Crystal Clear Spray
Surface: paper, boards, fabric

The following is another tutorial on solvent image transfer~
Enjoy watching!^_^
Here comes my favorite method of image transferring!
I start the first solvent with thinner oil and this is how it looked :
Wowww~
I have to say i like this piece of wood so much!!
I have seen many wooden artwork looked much similar to this!
Love this!!!
I could just punch a hole into this wooden board and hang on the wall as wall decoration!
Let's try more on woods!
The second solvent would be chartpak AD marker blender pen.
I wrote it against the page without images to the wooden cuboid, so that the page with images could be transferred to the wooden cuboid.
Look!
Amazing*_*
Could you see the flowery pattern on the top face of wooden cubiod?
Another angle shot!
Nice!!!
I have made myself a cuboid of printed flowers!
I could make my own wooden craft as gift using this method in future!

3. Adhesive
Print: Laserprint, injet printing/offset print
Adhesive:Mod Podge / White glue/PVA glue/Clear packing tape/
Polyurethane(water-based, clear) / Kryton Crystal Clear Spray
Surface: paper, boards I packing tape: glass, metal
Firstly, i taped the page with an image with a  clear tape. According to Huei Hoon, i needed to make sure there were no air bubbles in the tape as i taped it.
Secondly, I sprayed water on another face of the page, make sure it was totally wet.
When the paper was wet, it would be bent.
I hate chemistry so please don't ask me why =_=
Rubbing and rubbing!!
That's a sponge(Just in case you asked haha^_^)
About there!
After the white paper had been rubbed away , only inked images that stick onto the tape would remains .
Glue the images to the paper and done!
Hooray!
Looks amazing!!

//Brief

Design a wooden signage using image transfer method. Select one of the businesses below and do a small scale mockup with wood.
You can either use an existing brand name or come up with one yourself. You are free to propose any style or art direction for the design. The client is also open to an illustrative signage.

Choices:
• Florist
* Organic Food Grocer
• Café / Pub (including cat café /other novelty cafes)
• Restaurant / Eatery

Deliverable:
1 small scale mockup (about A4 size)
COT Cafe
I always have a dream of operating my own cafe, but i knew it would be harder than i operating a  restaurant as i discussed with Luke about entrepreneurship. Both of us came to a conclusion that restaurant definitely earn faster and stable in profit than a cafe. The reason was very simple as restaurant provides food that people need every day while cafe provides food that is limited in variety and it is categorized under Leisure& Entertainment.

Anyway back to the topic. These alphabets i didn't know why the inks got smurged and i thought i have failed in making a perfect cafe signage. However when i take a second look to realise that, it actually looked much more natural than i thought. The whole piece of cafe signage looked vintage and old with some faded and smurged inks. Those imperfecties add gradient and dimensions to the overall designs.

I used solvent to transfer images, both thinner oil and chartpak AD marker blender pen.
I was thinking using stamping would be fun too. I think i am going to do more methods of image transfers  after exams! I would have plenty of times then.
